Jack is rewarded by receiving Arthur's daughter's hand in marriage. The final encounter is with the giant Galligantus, whom he first scares with a blast on a magic trumpet, then cuts off his head and sends it to King Arthur. In the fourth encounter, Jack uses his coat of invisibility, which he received in the castle of the third giant, to attack a giant and his brother with impunity. Jack is able to trick this giant, however, and manages to get him to stab himself at breakfast. The third encounter is with a Welsh giant, who tries to kill Jack while he is resting at his castle.

Following this he sets off on a series of challenges, encountering a giant named Blunderbore who he strangles with a cord. The Cornish Jack slays his first giant using a pit trap and a pickaxe, gaining him reputation amongst the nearby village. It came into existence as a chapbook printed as "The History of Jack and the Giants" in 1711, which fused various older giant-killing tales into one narrative (which is why the story is longer and more episodic than a typical folktale). The color is awesome (Technicolor) and the sound is crystal clear. Looking for movie tickets Enter your location to see which movie theaters are playing Jack the Giant Killer (1962) near you. The only difference is that the laserdisc includes the theatrical trailer. The film is available on DVD from Goodtimes Home Video and taken from the same film transfer as MGM's laserdisc version. The team for 'Jack' were quite new to the craft but still managed to pull it off. Ray Harryhausen is a tough act to follow, he was indeed the founder and master of stop motion animation. This effect can be seen recently in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Some of them were quite clever such as Pendragon's disappearing trick done with his cape. The Giant was bad enough, but then there was the deliriously camp warlock (camp things always worried me as a child Marc Bolan gave me nightmares too) the evil version of the princess with the odd eyes and then worse.

There were some impressive effects for the time. The theme tune and title sequence of Tom Baker era Doctor Who, The ride in the boat in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory The snake from the Seven Faces of Dr Lao but most of all, the one thing that would make me cry and quake for hours and hours was Jack the Giant Killer. The budget for 'Jack' wasn't as big as 'Sinbad', it was about 6 to 1 in comparison. Outstanding supporting characters included the servant Garna, played by Walter Burke and the imp in the bottle, played by Don Beddoe. The other cast members performed well too as their characters stood out amongst the special effects. The film was loosely based on the fairy tale of the same name, and when we mean loosely, we mean very loosely. Juran and starring Kerwin Mathews (of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad fame) as the title character. Torin Thatcher was once again evil to the core.
